IJF

The International Jedi Federation (IJF) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit educational organization for people who live by the Jedi path as a real way of life.

Becoming a Member of the IJF

This page explains how membership works, which membership is right for you and how to apply. To learn more about who we are, visit our About Us page and read our IJF FAQ and Jedi Realism FAQ.

We are a group of Jedi Realists and Jediist who practice the Jedi path and apply it to our daily lives through meditation, ethical living, self-awareness and service. Some of our members are also part of role-playing groups, costume clubs or the lightsaber community. Those are wonderful parts of their lives and a personal choice a Jedi can make to express how they personally walk their path but for us, the path is how we choose to live.

If those communities are what draw you to IJF, Welcome! You're still welcome here. If you're not ready to declare the Jedi Path as something you will strive to do to the best of your ability you are still welcome to join our community as a Supporting Membership, (explained below). This membership type lets you be part of our community without taking the education path.

Start by Spending Time With Us

I feel it's also really important to note that you don't need to be a member to get to know us. You're welcome to join our community spaces, sit in on public gatherings and meet the people here before deciding whether IJF is right for you. In the spirit of building an intentional community that holds themselves accountable, we want people to feel confident in their decision of being here. So they are welcome to ask all they would like to know before declaring the jedi path.

Choose Your Membership

Membership to IJF is free and open to anyone who agrees to come in good faith and curiosity. We ask people to please read the Code of Conduct, Constitution and Bylaws to help empower you all with knowledge about how we run as an organization. There are two types of membership, and both are considered full members of the community. The difference is whether you're declaring yourself a Jedi and committing to do your best to walk the path, or joining to be part of the community without that commitment.

Jedi Member

Who it's for:

People who want to declare themselves Jedi and walk the Jedi path as a way of life. Becoming a Jedi Member is a statement of commitment: you're choosing to live by the Jedi Compass and to hold yourself to its values in your daily life. Your Certificate of Commitment marks that choice.

Jedi Membership is also the doorway to the IJF's education program, for those who want to deepen their practice through study, mentorship and training.

What it involves:

Jedi Members are invited to begin the Seeker Path, our two-semester course in Meditation, Jedi Ethics, The Force and Jedi Virtues. Classes are held live on Zoom and recorded, with a self-paced option. Assignments are reviewed by our Education Department. After completing the Seeker Path, you can apply for a one-on-one apprenticeship with a Mentor, and from there work toward the trials for Adept or Knighthood if you choose.

What it asks of you:

A sincere commitment to live by the Jedi Compass, honest self-reflection, and a willingness to apply the path in your daily life and in service to your community. If you take classes, it also asks for your time and completed assignments.

Jedi Members receive:

  • An official Certificate of Commitment

  • Access to the Seeker Path and course credit

  • The chance to apprentice under an IJF Knight or Master

  • Teaching and mentorship opportunities as they grow

Supporting Member

Who it's for:

People who want to be part of the IJF community without taking the education path. This is a great fit for:

  • Fans of the Jedi stories, cosplayers, role-players and lightsaber enthusiasts who enjoy the community and share our values

  • Friends and family of IJF members

  • People who practice another spiritual tradition and want to connect with the Jedi community

  • Anyone who wants to support the IJF's mission, or who wants to get to know us before committing to training

What it involves:

Supporting Members take part in our community spaces, events and conversations, and support the IJF's mission. There are no classes, assignments or trials. You're a full part of the community without the training.

What it asks of you:

The same as every member. Follow the Code of Conduct, treat others with respect and help keep our spaces welcoming.

Please note: Supporting Membership doesn't include the Seeker Path, apprenticeship, course credit or a path to Adept or Knighthood. If you later decide you'd like to train, contact us about becoming a Jedi Member.

What All Members Share

Whether you're a Jedi Member or a Supporting Member, you can:

  • Join our community spaces and members-only discussions

  • Take part in IJF and Chapter events

  • Vote in Council elections

  • Serve on committees

  • Use the Temple Archives

Not Sure Which to Choose?

  • Choose Jedi Member if you want to declare yourself a Jedi and walk the path, including if you want to study, train and grow with guidance and accountability.

  • Choose Supporting Member if you want to be part of the community, share in its values and enjoy its events, without declaring yourself a Jedi or taking classes.

If declaring yourself a Jedi feels like too big a step right now, that's okay. There's no rush. You're welcome to stay in our community spaces as a Supporting Member or a guest, take your time, and ask our members what walking the Jedi path is like for them. Many of us started out exactly that way. When you feel ready, you can make that commitment.

Young Members (Under 18)

While the IJF is family friendly, our programs are not designed for young people to attend on their own. A parent or legal guardian must be present with their young person at IJF activities, both online and in person.

Every applicant under 18 fills out the Youth Membership and Parental Consent form together with a parent or legal guardian.

  • Supporting Member: open at any age, with a parent or guardian taking part alongside them.

  • Jedi Member: open at age 17, with a parent's or guardian's consent and involvement. The IJF Council approves each application based on the applicant's maturity and readiness, and may ask to meet with the applicant and their parent or guardian first.

  • Youth Program (ages 13 to 17): coming soon.

Read Our Documents Before You Apply

We ask every applicant to read our policy documents first. They explain how we work, what we expect and what you can expect from us. Most questions people ask us are answered in them, so you should have a clear picture before you apply.

  • Jedi Compass: Our shared philosophy and the heart of everything we teach.

  • Code of Conduct: How we treat one another online and in person. Among other things, it doesn't allow AI-generated work on assignments, and it applies across all IJF spaces.

  • Constitution and Bylaws: How the IJF is governed, how membership works and how our Council is elected.

  • Explanation of Education: The Seeker Path, apprenticeship, and transfer options for Knights from other Jedi organizations.

  • Explanation of Titles: Every stage of the path, what each one requires and what each one means.

  • Road to IJF Knighthood: The full process and requirements for Knighthood.

You can also find them all of them under Policy Documents.

How to Apply

  1. Spend some time with us. Join our community spaces and get to know the people here.

  2. Read our policy documents. Make sure the IJF is the right fit for you.

  3. Choose your membership: Jedi Member or Supporting Member.

  4. Submit the free membership application. Applicants under 18 use the Youth Membership and Parental Consent form, filled out together with a parent or guardian.

  5. Council review. A member of the IJF Council reviews your application. For young applicants, the Council will contact the parent or guardian first.

  6. Welcome! If you're accepted, you'll receive instructions to create your website account and access member spaces. Jedi Members will also gain access to the Seeker Path and training areas.

After You Join

The Path for Jedi Members

  • Seeker Path: Live Zoom classes in two semesters, August to November and January to April. Semester One covers Meditation and Jedi Ethics. Semester Two covers The Force and Jedi Virtues. Every class is recorded, and a self-paced Solo Seeker option is available.

  • Apprenticeship: After completing both semesters, a Seeker can apply to train one-on-one with a Mentor. This is where learning turns into lived practice, including service to a community outside the Jedi world.

  • Adept and Knight: Apprentices who show over time that they live the Jedi Compass can go through the trials for Adept or Knighthood. Knighthood is open to those aged 22 and older and includes a background check and a Knighting Panel.

  • Master: For Knights who have served in good standing for at least seven years and have shown deep devotion to the Jedi way.

Titles in the IJF are not a measure of spiritual worth. They show the level of commitment and responsibility someone has chosen to take on. Advancing is always optional.

Staying an Active Member

Membership is reviewed each year. To stay active, keep in touch with at least two IJF Knights or Masters through classes, events, our Discord or other community spaces. If a member has no contact with two Knights or Masters for a year, their membership may be revoked.

Membership Questions

What's the difference between a Jedi Member and a Supporting Member?

A Jedi Member declares themselves a Jedi and commits to walking the path, with access to our education program. A Supporting Member is part of the community without that commitment or the education path.

Do I have to take classes?

Supporting Members don't take classes. Jedi Members are invited to begin the Seeker Path when they're ready.
